At last zambia celebrates her 46 years of peace with joy

Finally the day many zambians have been so curious about has come... the 46th independence anniversay...the day first republican President Dr kenneth kaunda was handed the instrument of goverment from princess royal at about midnight 46 years ago.And for the first time the national flag was hoisted connoting partriotism and unit.

In one of his independence speeches on the BBC Dr kenneth kaunda was qouted as saying: ...let's all be proud of zambia;let's be proud of our achievement and of our ambition for the future, but let's also show humility towards God and friendship towards others...

Indeed, humility towards God coupled with friendliness towards others including those who wrong you in one way or another is one of the prerequisite of true christianity.
Look, today zambia is called a christian nation because of those two rare qualities zambians themselves possess.

This year independence day is on sunday. And so,many zambians started their commemoration with thanks giving prayers at ther local churches in their respective places to fulfill their obligation towards their creator, for they know without a doubt that God has been with them...guiding them from all sorts of atrocities...

Well, wherever you are, pray for zambia...Ask God to continue blessing the nation of zambia in all its endeavours to bring peace to its neighbouring countries and the world at large.Pray that zambia become a haven for everyone including you.

Countdown to zambia's 46th independence anniversary

Preparation are underway in lusaka, zambia ...for the country's 46th independence anniversary which falls on sunday this year. All major driveways around lusaka are milling with the country's national flag spotting black, green, red and orange colours.Strapped round electric poles and trees ,the flags connotes the culmination of the national celebration which will be graced by a series of activities throughout the nation.

Right now, there are businesses running independence promotions...they've drastically dropped the prices of certain commodities to give local consumers chance to save some of their hard earned cash. They'll also be staging cultural dances within the city.

On one hand, the country's interdominion prayers in which all leaders meet to pray for the country's security and prosperity at about this time every year were held last week at the cathedraw of the holy righ here in lusaka.

The first republican president Dr kenneth kaunda attented the prayer service. And so did his predecessor Dr fredrick chiluba. At the end of the service the former presidents greeted each other with exceptional smiles.Look,we mighty have upset each other in the past, the two leaders subtly snurled at each other in silence. But let's just bury the hatchet for the well being of our nation and its God-fearing people.

Sure, that's the best thing any two rivals can do...forget about their differences and embrace what is good. Hmmm!

Well, what are you going to munch on this great day? You've better asked...You see, till now none of the chefs have dared to disclose the secret menu. Nontheless, here is a sneak peek at what freedom fighters and the like ate on independce day 46 years ago.A huge buffalo was consumed on that historical day. The buffalo was hunted by Mr Teddy Soddard. You can see its remains , a huge dark-curled horn, at lusaka national museum situatetd near the Freedom Statue,a stately place for national celebrations such labour day or independence day. You're free to call at lusaka national museum to see the buffalo horns and many antiquated pieces of art any time.

First, forget about those scathing reports the press used to make about this magnificent city of lusaka a decade ago: filthy alleys where you can't tread alone lest scoudrels descends on you, unsightingly market centres, street kids criss-cross driveways in persuit of motorists at traffic lights or sun-seared vendors loitoring in shop corridors with stewed cassava on their heads. That is long gone.

Right now, lusaka is gaining its momentum... Everywhere you turn there is something pleasant for your eyes.At every corner you'll find a new shopping complex being constructed or already refurbished and under operation. All those pre-independence buildings you left a long time ago when you visited lusaka are getting demolished to pave way for ultra-modern shopping complex. For example, take the area that once engulfed the Engineering Services Corporation (ESCO),just opposite the offices of Zambia's main electricity company,Zesco. Here ,in this former ESCO area,a multi-purpose business centre is under construction

Christened after zambia's third republican president, the late levy mwanawasa,Levy's Business Centre will boast the largest parking lot in its class,a beautiful hotel plus a big shopping mall.

What else?Well, take a walk from Manda Hill past National Assembly driveway, you'll see just opposite Arcade Shopping Mall, another beautiful top-level hotel floating peaceful in its granduer. This new hotel is at the pinnacle of completion. And once it is completed it will without a doubt add granduer to the ever growing city of lusaka.

You see,no part of lusaka is being spared. Demolition of old buildings is swimping lusaka more than you can ever imagine.Everyday sounds of heavy bulldozer demolishing old buildings reverbrate accross the city.As long as any building is unsightingly it will be brought
down and replaced with something wholesome.

This transformation lusaka city is under going has always being the dream of many Zambians. And now, that dream is coming to pass...triggering a wave of satisfication in every one including you.One of these days when you happen to come to lusaka you'll be amazed to see these great changes. In fact, just come now and seize up an opportunity to set up your own business before others realise it.Sure, you'll find something fabulous in lusake which will live with you forever.

Where Do You Buy Or Sell Your Merchandise?

When you're in Lusaka ,Zambia, happen to ask anyone this question like the one above. You will be told outright that it's at City Market and New Soweto Market--the two ultra-modern trading centres Zambia has ever had since independence.

Separated by high tension power lines plus a series of makeshift stores, the two markets lay in an area that once engulfed the fabled old soweto market.

Sure, long before Lusaka City Market and New Soweto Market could spring up, Lusaka--Zambia's metropolis city--had no prominent market where you can sell or buy goods with total peace of mind.At that time, the only trading place that existed was old soweto market which was so dilaphidated that during rain season you can't dare to frequent it for fear you might catch an infectious disease such cholera. And what's more, local authorities also found it hard to collect revenues from marketeers. In fact, vendors were taking advantage of the market bad state. And often eluded local authorities when approach for levies. All these and many more hit the headlines in the local papers.

However,in 2004 the government along with the Zambia Defence Force started clearing the makeshift stores to pave way for the construction of the new market. It's a non-stop task that stretched over a period of three years. Later, the new market was completed and christened Lusaka City Market.

Did the government stop there? No!You see,the government then under the leadership of Dr. F.T.J Chiluba realised that the market it had just set up could accommodate the ever increasing number of vendors. So,in few year that followed, the government embarked on the construction of yet another ultra-modern market that would surpass Lusaka City Market in terms of capacity as well as curtail the number of street vendors. Called New Soweto Market, the new infrastrature has since being built. And is up and running serving as the second major outlet for agro-produce and other popular consumer goods.

Today, both Lusaka City Market and New Soweto are rated as the best markets in Zambia... visited by well over 45000 people a day.Manned 24/7 by armed paramilities, these two markets boast state -of -the-art parking lot, police post,a bank, relentless water supply plus spacious stores where you can sell your merchandise without any hassle. Some young enterprenuers own two or so stores at these prominent markets and provide work to many school leavers who can't find jobs with big companies.

What To Buy

Both New Soweto Market and Lusaka City Market are awash with many popular consumer goods such as clothes, foot wear, dvd movies and players.Cellphones and accessories, television sets, home theatres, groceries and many more.Usually things here at these two markets are cheaper. You can get a cellphone or second slippers at a bargain.

More recently stores where you can have any document typed professionally have opened. Mostly these secretarial stores are manned by young graphic designers who provide typing and printing services to local people on a daily basis.

Well,it's time to pack and head home.As you do that, please walk along the market's main foyers. Here you'll witness first hand vendors hilariously haranguing at customers in a bid to coax them to buy from them. Also saunter into one of the tea shop located within these two markets and happen to sip hot-tea or coffee for less than a dollar ,and not to mention eating nshima, zambia's favourity dish served with meat and vegetables. It will without a doubt envigorate your way and leave you with a sense of longing to visit the two places again.
